Our History

Founded in 2011

Founded in 2011, COSM’s genesis is in the semiconductor industry. Over the course of several successful start-ups, the team has worked together in one combination or another over the past 40 years. We have over 350 man years of experience implementing high energy electron and ion beams in a variety of applications, from developing the first semiconductor focused ion beam mask repair system to the world’s first Helium Ion Microscope achieving a imaging beam diameter of 0.3nm opening up new applications from semiconductors, carbon nanotubes, graphene and many more.

Based in the North Shore area of Boston, we have access to the best-of-breed in engineering talent and resources. Our staff has played key technical roles with a range of companies in the following technologies and with over 70 patents:

  • Helium ion microscope (gas field ion source) achieving a beam spot size of 0.3nm

  • Ion implant systems including novel ion sources

  • Focused ion beam induced metal and insulator deposition and etch for IC circuit edit

  • Plasma and thermal chemical vapor deposition systems for flat panel display, integrated circuit and LED manufacturing

  • Electron beam lithography system

  • Focused ion beam systems for integrated circuit failure analysis, circuit edit and photomask repair including liquid metal field emission ion sources in gallium and eutectic alloys

  • Laser direct write metal and insulator systems for LCD active matrix repair in manufacturing

Tool Makers

We build the machines that let you build the parts; repeatedly and reliably. We have a rich history of taking the complex interplays of system design, environmental and material issues, and physics to create a tool that yields reproducible results with verifiable data. We build these systems to our customers specifications and provide the technical and applications support necessary in advanced manufacturing environments.

Collaborators

As tool makers, we are partners with our customers and we believe this is crucial to success for the development of next generation manufacturing technologies. While some systems are “off the shelf”, the best cutting-edge products are the result of a collaboration, where the needs of the customer directly drives our innovation.

Precision

Nano-Meters to Multi-Meter

Members of COSM were key technical contributors to the 3D printing of this platinum spring. Our ability to work with our customers to understand their needs and enable machines to perform to their expectations are unsurpassed. We now bring this level of technical sophistication to the AM world.
